Thanks! Indeed, it was a great book.

That quote from McCarthy was visionary and, for me, absolutely current in certain circles that are more reactionary to the development of AI.

The "AI effect" was popularized by Larry Tesler's expression: “Intelligence is whatever machines haven't done yet.” And it is illuminating about the strategy of retreating from all AI achievements to preserve human uniqueness at all costs.

I recently published a little bit extensive paper about it, in case you are interested:

Great book, anyway.

That quote is also great! That comment comes to my mind the paradox about whether we'll eventually develop an AGI. I cannot answer, but I also mention that we should have something to detect that AGI.

I think that Larry Tesler's expression doesn't aim to underestimate technical efforts. I think it's aligned with Gary Marcus' critics about exaggerated claims of current systems. They're great, they do great things, but simply, if we go deeper, they cannot connect abstract ideas, among other things.

In the book I read, Mitchell mentions this example, and it's so clear what kind of things are still almost impossible for machines http://karpathy.github.io/2012/10/22/state-of-computer-vision/
